Bachelor of Arts in Management Information Systems
Course descriptionThe major in Management Information Systems (MIS) combines the areas of Business and Computer Science to educate individuals in the effective and efficient handling of one of the most important organizational resources to managers: information. MIS is the science of taking data, processing it, and transforming it into meaningful information that can be understood by an organization.
The courses in Management Information Systems are designed to help decision makers understand how information technology can be used to improve managerial decisions. An Information Systems professional should possess a good understanding of technology, as well as a broad knowledge of management functions.
The Management Information System Student can:
1. Explain the basic concepts of information systems
2. Describe the systems development process
3. Explain basic concepts of operating systems
4. Explain the basic concepts of data communications and networking
5. Demonstrate fluency in at least one programming language and acquainted with several more.
6. Explain basic concepts of object-oriented programming.
7. Explain the basic von Neumann computer architecture.
Bachelor of Arts Requirements: Required courses include: MIS 220, 321, 322, 410, CSCI 201, 202, 280, 345, 360, BUAD 225, 276 and 350. In addition, five support courses are required: ECON 100, ACCT 203, WRTG 225, MATH 200 and SPEC 111. The MIS faculty will certify the general education service component and competencies in computer usage, moral/ethical reasoning, oral communication, research and writing in this major.
