B.S. in Chemistry

  • Course description The major in chemistry requires a minimum of fourteen courses. Majors select either Option I which combines a chemistry major with advanced work in a second field, or Option II, an intensive chemistry major. All majors take the Core Program together with the requirements listed for each option below:

    Core Program (10 courses)

       1. Chemistry 14-15, Basic Principles of Chemistry OR Chemistry 29, Advanced General Chemistry
       2. Chemistry 116-117, Organic Chemistry
       3. Chemistry 121-122, Physical Chemistry
       4. Mathematics 30, 31, 32, Calculus I, II, III

    Option I (4-6 courses)

       1. Chemistry 126 and/or 127, Advanced Laboratory in Chemistry
       2. Physics 30, 31, General physics OR Physics 33, 34, Principles of Physics
       3. Chemistry 190L or 191 or 188L-190L. In general, a one-semester thesis (191) is an extensive library research thesis; (190L) is a one-semester experimental thesis; and a two-semester thesis (188L and 190L) is a laboratory or field research project. Students with a two-semester thesis normally take 188L, Senior Research, in the Fall.
       4. Two advanced course in a second field chosen in consultation with a faculty advisor.

    Option II (8 courses)

       1. Chemistry 126-127, Advanced Laboratory in Chemistry
       2. Physics 33, 34, Principles of Physics
       4. Two advanced electives in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular modeling, or interdisciplinary electives involving chemical concepts or techniques, chosen in consultation with the chemistry staff.
