    Look around your desk. What do you see? Perhaps a book, a bag, a pen, a web site on your computer screen. If you examine each item, chances are you will find several things created by a graphic designer. The book bag and pen each display company logos. The book has several graphics or illustrations. The web site has a cool design and animated features. The fact is, nearly everything has a “graphic identity” now. This helps people recognize different brands and companies.

    Program Overview

    The Associate of Applied Business Degree in Graphic Design prepares students for successful careers in advertising, marketing, promotion or printing. Graduates may enter their career field in entry-level jobs such as computer production artist, advertising designer, brand identity designer, desktop publisher, freelance artist, illustrator, web designer or cartoonist. Employers include publishing firms, advertising agencies, marketing firms, record companies, brand identity firms, in house advertising departments, web design firms, promotional companies and sign companies. This program stresses fundamental design theory and practices studied through real-world design exercises and projects. Graphic Design students will develop the skills necessary to conceive an idea, nurture it and develop it. Skills in creativity will be simultaneously supported with skills in computer graphics to create functional and interesting visual communications that provide powerful impact on the viewer.

    Graphic designers define a variety of job descriptions. They create brochures and ads to promote products or services. They produce logos for products or businesses. They create visual designs for company reports and other print materials. Some graphic designers work on design and layout for magazines or other publications. No matter what, graphic designers use knowledge about layout and design principles to guide their creations.

    Some graphic designers work in television or film. They may design the credits that appear at the beginning or end of a television show or movie. They may create storyboards for film production. Storyboards are drawings that show the sequence of the story to be developed on film. Graphic designers also work in website design. They choose the colors and images and design the layout to make the website more appealing.
