Comments about Science Teaching Credential Program - At the institution - Long Beach - CA - California
A teacher with a Single Subject Credential is authorized to teach the specific subject(s) named on the credential in departmentalized schools. This is commonly done in California high schools, junior high and middle schools. However, a teacher authorized for single subject instruction may be assigned to teach any subject in his or her authorized fields at any grade level: pre-school, kindergarten and grades one through twelve; or in classes organized primarily for adults. (Music, Physical Education, Art, and Foreign Language teachers in elementary schools usually have Single Subject Credentials).
A science teaching credential enables you to teach middle school and high school science. The credential has two major parts - content and pedagogy (or science & teaching). In order to demonstrate that you know "what to teach" (the content or subject matter competency) you must complete prescribed courses in your field or pass state approved tests. California schools often teach integrated science so the credential requires you to demonstrate breadth and depth in the content area. As you look at the list of required courses, you will see that you are required to complete introductory level courses in each science field (breadth) and upper division courses in your own field (depth). The professional education courses will help you learn how to teach. In these courses you will learn about methodology, classroom management and reading in the science classroom. You will also learn about today's schools and how you can most effectively impact the diversity of students you will find there.
