B.A. in Chinese Studies

  • Course description
Many of our students choose Chinese Studies as a second major or a minor, combining a UCSD disciplinary major (such as economics or political science) with Chinese Studies courses which prepare them for a career related to China. In addition to coordinating courses on China in various departments, the Program in Chinese Studies offers language and culture courses under its own auspices to round out the available offerings.

The Chinese Studies program opens the way to various fields such as Chinese politics, economy, history or archaeology. To study Chinese means to study a culture, as well as a people. Chinese society is rich heritage of novels, short stories, poetry, drama, and, more recently, film, reflecting the values and experiences of this great people.

The program also help you understand the language, what makes it powerful, and how it actually functions in Chinese society. To be at ease and effective in a Chinese environment learning the language is half the battle, but knowing about the culture behind the language is the other.
